was clearly a much superior thinker
to Max Eastman.
In any event, as I suggested,
what is called for today is not a pious
extension of the radical heritage, but
rather some fresh and independent
thought. I think it also must be said
that the attempt to extend the radical
heritage into the present has led to
the trendy ideologies of political
correctness.
The literary and intellectual
achievements came after 1937 from

Podhoretz, Lionel Abel, Steven
Marcus, to name just a few.
Diggins's jibe at our ignoring
American subjects brings back
memories of criticism from the right
that we were outsiders. And his re–
mark about our Trotskyism, in addi–
tion to being inaccurate, repeats the
old criticism from the Stalinists and
later from the left historians.
Incidentally, I did not put down
Diggins's book as a whole: it contains
much useful information and specu–
lation.
