that some of the world's worst despots - Robespierre and Lenin come to
mind - were notably unmaterialistic. However much we deplore materi–
alism, in politics the rhetoric of antimaterialism is usually vacuous or
sinister. At the very least antimaterialism makes civilized debate difficult.
At the worst, antimaterialism has been invoked to launch political
programs that have been downright evil.
