PARTISAN REVIEW
Anglo-Saxon tradition is not the tradition that I feel
in
my own bones. On the
other hand, it is a tradition that has formed our minds and provided the
precedents for new talents.
I
am not sure a Western writer could write or
think at
all
in the act of rejecting the Western tradition. Since many of their
ideas come from Heidegger, even Derrida and the deconstructionist
epigones, in their antitraditional stances, do not ignore the intellectual
tradition: they play naughty games within it. The breaks with tradition
always occur within the terms of the tradition.
Perhaps a formal criticism of Ozick's piece could be made: so vivid is
her characterization of the mood of the present, that it sometimes
overshadows her disenchantment with it. But from many of the things Ozick
says in her piece,
I
would assume that she agrees with the defense of
literary tradition and the emphasis on the distinction between a writer's life
and work. Perhaps the question of belief is too complicated to be resolved
summarily.
