expense of male presence. Whereas Ann and Adele want to get anywhere
but here, to escape the burdens of their own guilt and helplessness, and
Coriola cuts herself off from everything except her own memories, percep–
tions, and passions, Tannen's women and men find themselves so involved
with each other and the world around them that their private burdens are
somehow shared with and diffused among others. They survive the curses
of the past by embracing the present.
