and more darkness than she bargained for; Brookner's passes an
altogether more detached and ambiguous kind of sentence. That
may be because Johnson is using her slightly flimsy characters to
point up a breezy moral lesson on the deceits and seductions of being
a tourist at a revolution; Brookner is crafting a much more private
elegy for the kind of woman who is a tourist everywhere, even, and
especially, at home.
