appear in a volume oj correspondence between them, just published by New

Dear E: Murkin contract for your 5th Decade , O.K., will be glad to
get copy in time.
I thought you didn't like Trotsky. So why recommend me Par–
tisan Rev[iew].? In any case, I doubt if they'll put forth more than
one issue. The day of the little magazine is definitely
over.
Nobuddy
sees even a commercial venture like
Globe
anywhere around-not
even in Brentano's which has damn near everything- not to men–
tion
Partisan.
Seein' as you might appreciate a fact,
if
you can see
it - were here to see it - the battle as far as the mag. field is con–
cerned is between Universities old style
&
the newly "enlightened"
factions in 'em. Old Nick
&
his ilk
&
the trustees will support
Harpers etc,
&
the younger professors concerned with economick etc
will make a go of
Science
&
Society, Marxist Quarterly, New Masses .
Lost
on the fringe of things the younger litterati who don't know nuthin
&
have less guts
&
less conviction will hang on to corrup the latter
(New Masses or Daily Worker etc) or break away if they can't make
pin money
&
form cliques etc which will come to naught anyway... .
What I need,
&
I wdn't mention it except that you persist in
recommending me gristle, not even a bone, like Partisan Rev. is a
Reputable Bourgeois Publisher.
