sities are trying to take over, to be more active, less traditional, and
more inventive. They try to have more links with students, they en–
courage young researchers in the humanities, organize exchanges of
students and researchers with European universities. This augurs
well for a better cultural understanding between Europe and America
in the future . On the contrary, the present period seems to be one of
mutual withdrawal and suspicion.
