ment). At the same time that we enjoy this irresistible fictional ma–
terial, we are also caught up in the tonal-perspectival-evaluative
complexity of the narration (just when we think we know what's go–
ing on, with story, character and point of view, everything shifts; we
learn something new, or we are reminded of something we have
forgotten; we must reassess). The mysteries and sexual complica–
tions of the plot are absorbed and transmuted, therefore, by the
parallel epistemological and moral complexity of the narrative. And
the book is un-put-downable, a stunningly good read.
