I won't find you strolling casually
in the little grove of ash and elm.
When the door opens, that will be my wife
returning from her shopping, my daughter
dancing in her new sneakers. Today
no ghosts will be allowed to arrive
wrapt in their mild shimmers of light.
Nor you, who have so often entered
these stories, speaking
my lines, accepting my instructions
with that perfectly insubstantial
attention that becomes you
amid all of this ordinary life.
I walk out to get the mail,
drive to school, to the store.
I see a movie and returning home
glance up at the stars.
I sit down to write, and the stillness
begins to make me wish for you,
but I will give you nothing
to think of, not even the smallest
memory of a child
