a town I found myself following two dusty, battered Opels,
crammed with Turkish families who were evidently returning to
Germany after a visit home (or returning home after a visit
to
Turkey). In each of them father sat at the wheel, mother sat at his
side, grandfather or grandmother sat in the back, and in the inter–
stices between these large bodies were children of every age. They
looked with bright eyes out of the back windows; their dusky arms
trailed out of the open side windows; their black heads bounced
about as they played or fought with one another in the limited
space available. A little later, after I had parked my car and thus
lost sight of them forever, I read the following message pencilled
in large letters on the wall of a public lavatory :
AUslander ver–
gaset wie das jUdische Verpack,
Gas the foreigners, like the Jew–
ish rabble.
AN INTRIGUING PORTRAIT OF
CAPITALISM ON THE BRINK...
ITALIAN ENTREPRENEURS
Rearguard of Progress
Edith Kurzweil, Rutgers University.
A derailed presentation of creative solutions and
strategies devdoped by Italian entrepreneurs who
have been able to prosper in an otherwise unstable
economy plagued by inflation, weak currency, and
militant unions. Based on interviews conducted in
1971
and again in
1978, 60
successful owners,
founders and managers ofmiddle sized firms share
their views on topics such as risktaking, authority,
bureaucracy, unions, taxes and politics. Material
covered offers insight into asomewhat stereotypical
perception of Italy as an unstable country of
violence and anarchy. Dr. Kurzweil's research was
sponsored by the Angelli Foundation, the Angelli
family being the owners of Fiat.
