Still Nervous
What was the legacy of the New Deal? Moderate refonn or
all-out collectivism? Considering men like Hiss, Henry
Wallace, and William O. Douglas, the answer is not clear
even now . The question had been posed abstractly by books
like Friedrich von Hayek's
The Road to Seifdom;
and if
McCarthy was not the man to answer it, still it was a real
question. When Truman and Acheson defended Hiss, it
became an unnerving one.
