joining the person for whom,
led blindly by darker sources
than even he could understand,
he had written the note to Anne ,
never dreaming
the train would crash so soon,
derail, hurtling over the embankment
and his limbs mingle forever
not with his new love,
but with the man two seats up
across the aisle
who trustingly places his brains
in Anne's lover's quiet hands;
while in the meantime Anne,
after pacing and crumpling and smoothing,
settles down to 120 sleeping pills ,
which she drinks methodically with water,
having no idea that at that very moment,
turning a corner in Kansas City,
is a blond man with blue eyes,
corn-fed and wheat-fed,
who at that

moment
thinks of moving to Anne's city , and
intends to call at the very address
where right this minute Anne is on
pill number 53;
it may be that they will find her in time,
and she will sit out her days
in the wooden wheelchair the carpenter built
for her great-grandfather,
who had never tried to kill himself
but rather had very bad lumbago,
watched over by the young blond man
from Kansas City who could easily
