HISTORY, GUILT,
AND
HABIT
History, Guilt, and Habit
represents a tour de force by a great
contemporary thinker. In these three lectures, delivered in Van–
couver in
1978,
Owen Barfield paradoxically provides both an
impressive introduction to his thought and a brilliant extension
of that ti10ught into areas only touched on in his previous works.
The first lecture distills the essence of Barfield's primary concern,
the evolution of consciousness, and clarifies the distinction be–
tween that subject and the history of ideas. The second lecture
applies Barfield's understanding of the evolution of conscious–
ness to the modern world, showing that the modern perception
of the world is dangerously one-sided, and that this one-sided–
ness is the chief cause of alienation today. In his final lecture,
Barfield tells us what should be done in the face of the imbalance
in our received thinking-perceiving.
