changing form of the relationships among these three principles that
the history of slavery and its continuity with th e subsequent fa te of
black Americans must be sought.
The history of slavery remains a thriving schola rly business, as the
recent publication of G. Dun can Ri ce's
Th e Rise and Fall of Black
Slavery
(1975 ) attests. Certainly the debate th a t rages around
Time on
the Cross
will do the business littl e harm , since it rescues the fie ld from
the constriction entailed by th e praise of Genovese's and Davis's works
as "definitive."
If
the historiograph y of other subjects serves as any
precedent, certain features in the future literature on slavery may be
anticipated. The extreme positions of Fogel and Engerman will be
taken as overstatements of the evidence for the economi c and social
viability of slavery that must be ta ken into account in the continuing
study of the subject and that supplies the historiographi cal dimension
of current poli tica l distraction from civi l rights. As usua l, new histori–
ography and new politi ca l concerns wi ll jointly modu la te the tradi–
tiona l institutiona l, intell ectual , and moral categories that remain the
h istorian 's only way to organize an in creasingly multifarious past.
