Duffy
Edited by George H. Duffey
Nicholas Duffy was a cobbler by trade, with little pretention of
gaining literary immortality. Yet his verse, written as· a young immi–
grant, shows a clear poetic facility grounded on sturdy perceptual
foundations . The sensitivity with which he treats his varied themes
discloses a mind deeply imbued with reverence, patriotism, love of
beauty and a fond compassion for humanity. This collection was re–
cently discovered by the editor, Dr. George H. Duffey, a great-great
grandson of the poet and himself an author. His introduction Hlumi–
nates the background of the poems and provides interesting insights
into the character of his forefather .
