ture. Like other writers before him (Tolstoy comes immediately to
mind), he is caught between his social awareness and concern and his
predtlection d'artiste.
Whether or not his new mode of didactic
dramatic invention will be permanent is beyond even our specula–
tion. Meanwhile the earlier plays remain, testing us, challenging our
habits, harsh, unaccomodating, and heart-breaking.
