Vol. 43 No. 1 1976 - page 83

I asked him to sit
down and race a horse
against mine
and the dollars I had
we split between
us.
The man
drinking Pepsi
in the high booth
called out their names
as the horses blinked
in their lights
to the bell, and
we raced till the boy
won a horse the size of mine.
We got up and left
out of money
and the lights blinked
on behind
us.
I spent my last quarters
letting him throw a pop corn ball
into lighted fish bowls
and you could keep the fish .
We went by a dart throw
where a lady with long
black hair and a cigarette
called out , Come here,
bring your little boyfriend.
She put her hands
in her apron fisted
among the coins
and behind her
a row of radios,
each gleaming with
its dials .
