F. R.
LEAVIS:
"The fierce
~ian
ofour civilIzation!'
- The Times
(London )
The distinguished critic, F.R. Leavis, focuses on
two urgent concerns of contemporary society: the
need for an educated public which can influence
policy-makers, and the need for that public to
recognize the quasi-scientific philistinism which
fills
most "serious" writing on important social
issues. He emphasizes the creative writer as
thinker, whose work must be judged by the quality
of intelligence which informs it.
