of Norman Mailer. ... JOSEPH WEIZENBAUM , a professor of computer
science at M.I.T., gained considerable fame when he wrote a program
that made it possible for a computer to imitate a psychiatrist conducting
an interview. His thoughts turned to the social implications of science
and technology when he discovered that certain sections of the psychi–
atric community considered his program a serious and welcome step
toward " automating psychotherapy ." His book, Computer Power and
