making jokes out of " Tragedy." "A Conversation with my Father" is by
implication a self-criticism , a limiting and defining of mode , yet , sympto–
matic of Paley's best work , it illustrates by example the large and complex
seriousness she affects (as if placating the gods) to deny herself.
