Assistance to Refugees
from East Pakistan in India,
By the end of October the Governm.ent of India reports
that over 9.6 million refugees had entered India from East
Pakistan. In the areas most affeded by the influx refugee
camps have been set up and emergency relief supplies made
available from both local resources and from contributions
channelled through the United Nations.
Some $139 million have now been pledged or received.

U.N. assistance. The needs of
the refugees nevertheless remain immense'. On 13 October the
High Commissioner issued an urgent world-wide appeal for
additional contributions so that the most basic needs of the
refugees would continue to be met•
