suppose this is mainly because in intellectual circles consexvatism is still
something to be ashamed of. No wonder there are so many socialists
who hate radicals, so many liberals who find the left more frightening
than the right. This is too bad, for, aside from the question of duplicity,
the fear of sounding consexvative discourages a perfectly honorable and
useful tradition, one that has its own intellectual justification when it
is open and secure in its convictions and not just running scared.
