United Nations
Assistance to Refugees
from East Pakistan in Iindia
Some $110 million have been pledged through the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, comprising both
cash and kind. The Government of India has set up refugee
camps in the five areas most affected by the influx, and has
made available food, shelter, medicaments, and clothing from
both local resources and from the contributions made through
the U.N. system. The needs of the refugees, nevertheless,
remain immense. The number of refugee has, as of I Septem–
ber, reached over 8.3 million.
To assist the Government of India in meeting the humani–
tarian needs of the refugees, the United Nations continues
to rely on contributions from all sources.
