rises amid cheers and applause. He stands bowed. Puts a
hand protectively over his eyes, then
suppor~
himself with both
hands on the desk.
LENIN: We shall now proceed to construct the socialist order.
Applause.
All rise. From the sides soldiers and sailors come in. They all raise
their arms and clench their fists. They begin to sing the "Interna–
tionale."
As they are singing, a troop of soldiers dressed in the uniform of the
late twenties clear themselves a path through the assembled people.
They come up behind
TROTSKY.
Two officers take him by the arms.
The song ends. All turn away from
TROTSKY.
Only
LENIN
remains
standing beside him. One of the officers reads from a paper. All
stand motionless.
OFFICER:
Citizen Trotsky, Lev Davidovich, charged under paragraph
fifty-eight/ten of the penal code of having taken part in counterrev–
olutionary activity through the organization of an illegal antisoviet
party, whose efforts have lately been directed towards provoking anti–
soviet actions and preparing for an armed struggle against soviet
power. Resolved that Citizen Trotsky, Lev Davidovich, be deported
from the territories of the Soviet Republic. Promulgated on the twen–
tieth of January, nineteen hundred and twenty-nine.
The officers and soldiers drag

towards the back. He resists.
They lift him up bodily and carry him to the back.
LENIN
remains
alone at the desk. Nobody looks round at the group.
