DAR: EARTH DAY A SMOKESCREEN
WASHINGTON (AP) -
While much of the nation joined in cleanup
activities marking Earth Day, the Daughters of the American Revolu–
tion branded the environmental movement as "distorted and exag–
gemted."
"'This environment movement is one of the subversive element's last
steps," Mrs. Clarence Howard, a delegate from Missouri, said during
debate. "They've gone after the military and the police and now they're
going after our parks and playgrounds."

RIGHT-WING RALLY IN BOSTON
The Young Americans for Freedom declined an invitation from the
Birch leaders to put up a Y.A.F. exhibit. The organization has exhibited
at these rallies in the past.
Kent Courtney, national chairman of the Conservative Society
of
America and one of

exhibitors, contended the Y.A.F. boycott was
inspired by William F. Buckley Jr., the author and syndicated columnist
in whose Connecticut home Y.A.F. was founded a decade ago.
"Buckley has always disputed the theory, which all of us here
be–
lieve, that there is a Communist conspiracy with'in our government,"
Mr. Courtney said in an interview.
"All Y.A.F. chapters follow his lead. He dictated
this
boycott. When
one conservative calls another a racist, there's a nigger in the woodpile
and he was :it."

White House sources said the briefing teams
also
took soundings
on the mood of the country. "We can tell quite a bit from the lines of
questioning," said one official. "We had a resident hippie in one city
give us some insights into the youth movement."
