(upI)-Studying piano discourages marijuana smok–
ing and rioting, according to Dr. Irl Allison, the founder of the National
Guild of Piano Teachers.
A poll of the teachers of participants in the 40th annual National
Piano-Playing Auditions "shows not one of the 76,000 participants
has
been found to smoke marijuana or to riot," Dr. Allison said.
This is because piano students, "confined to a private practice
room under the supervision of a private piano teacher, had more time
for meditative thought," and because "concentration on the works of
great musical composers uplifts the piano student," Dr. Allison continued.

"USS PEACE TOUR" URGED BY MURPHY
WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 (upI)-Sen. George Murphy CR., Calif.)
has proposed that the battleship New Jersey, just retired from Vietnam
service, be painted white, renamed the
USS Peace
and sent around the
world on a goodwill mission.
He said she should carry the "implements" of peace such as the
Declaration of Independence, some moon rocks and a modern American
kitchen.
"She could be displayed in ports around the world," Murphy said,
"to give graphic evidence by her size, and by her potential for destruc–
tion, of the powerful forces at the command of this country."

ATLANTIC
CITY,
Sept. 29-George Meany criticized the Nixon Ad–
ministration today for what he called its "new Republican Southern
strategy. . . ."
Part of the strategy, he suggested, was the nomination of Judge
Clement E. Haynsworth, Jr. to the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Meany noted that an Administration official said recently that
there would have been opposition even if the President had appointed
one of the 12 Apostles.
The AFL-CIO would not have opposed that appointment, he said.
"Because,
if
you recall, the 12 Apostles were the friends of the
meek and the humble, of the little people, and if they had any wealthy
friends, that fact does not appear in the New Testament,"
Mr.
Meany
said.
