CHICAG O
years, all across this country, in front of fancy hotels - the Waldorf,
the Bc\'erly Wilshire, the Conrad Hilton - where the men who rule
this country wine and dine and plot their deeds of death.
It was only when we came to Chicago, the world capital of crime,
that we were denied our rights at gunpoint. It's up to you, now, not to
let American democracy go down the drain. (You six-monthers sensed
the war was rotten and futile; you US's and RA's have seen for your–
selves ) . It's up to you to let us stand in front of the Amphitheater.
We are not going to charge the delegates (we don't have the instru–
ments of force and aren't going to use force). But we insist on our
right to stand witness against this evil deed - the abandonment of the
peace plank and the nomination of Lyndon Johnson's flunky .
To the Police
Our argument
111
Chicago is not with you.
We have come to confront the rich men of power who ordered
America into a war she voted against ... The men who have brought
our country to the point where the police can no longer serve and pro–
tect the people - only themselves.
We know you're underpaid.
We know you have to buy your own uniforms.
You often get the blame and rarely get the credit in day-in day-out
situations.
Now you're on 12-hour shifts and not being paid overtime.
You should realize we aren't the ones who created the terrible con–
ditions in which you work. This nightmare-week was arranged by
Richard Daley and Lyndon Johnson, who decided we shouldn't have the
right to express ourselves as free people.
We understand - and you should, too - that you are simply the
servants of Daley and Johnson.
Our prayer is for the day when you can again become the servants
- no, the friends - of the people.
