Evelina
By
FANNY BURNEY ;
edited with an introduction by
EDWARD BLOOM,
Brown University. Evelina,
the first and best of Fanny Burney's novels, tells
the story of a young girl, fresh from the provinces and "her first appearance upon
the great and busy stage of life." The life and temper of eighteenth-century Eng–
land is revealed through Evelina's curiosity, with all its contrasts of situation and
character-from the peace of the countryside to the excitement of London, from
the idyllic to the near-tragic and realistic. The text relies on that of the first
edition (1778) , with illustrations from the fourth edition ( 1779 ).

Greek Federal States
THEIR INSTITUTIONS AND HISTORY
By
J.
A.
O . LARSEN,
University of Chicago.
This volume describes the govern–
ment and institutions of Greek federal states, and assesses their contributions to
interstate relations and rivalries. An introductory chapter sketching federal in–
stitutions is followed by two sections, divided chronologically by the King's Peace,
and in each of these, descriptions of individual states are followed by discussions
of the narrative history. The emphasis is placed on the contributions of the federal
states to some commonly neglected or distorted aspects of Greek history, and also
aspects of Roman expansion and imperialism when pertinent.
