SALTUS
(1855-1921)
Beyond the confines of literary periods, a writer of genuine talent may often
be found locked out by his own rebellion. Edgar Saltus was such an outcast.
Together with Lafcadio Hearn, Saltus was pronounced "chief among writers
who developed a polished style and a concern for artistry of an exotic and
unconventional nature" by the
Literary History of the United States.
Saltus
was attacked in his own time and in turn was championed by such discerning
rritics as Carl Van Verhten and James Huneker. The sophisticated novels
about New York are authentic documents of America in transition, while his
admiration for French writers antiripated the direction American
letter~
would take within his own lifetime. With attention

writers, Saltus' highly colored prose stands as a model for late Ameri·
can Victorianism at its richest.
In reissuing thirty-four of these works, AMS Press intends not to represent
a minor writer as a major one but to offer a characteristic craftsman and
thinker whose stylistic achievements deserve renewed interest.
Among the Saltus works available are:
The Anatomy of Negation, The Truth
About Tristrem Varick, A Transaction in Hearts: An Episode, Imperial
Purple,
and
Vanity Square: A Story of Fifth Avenue Life.
Please write for a complete listing of all thirty-four works. Each is cloth·
bound and priced at $10.00.
