THE
Kariye Djami
BY PAUL A. UNDERWOOD
The publication of an archaeological
project of the Byzantine Institute of the
United States
Here is the definitive work on the remarkable 14th-century Byzantine
mosaics and frescoes uncovered after hundreds of years in a small
church on a back street of Istanbul. After the Ottoman conquest of
Constantinople, the Church of the Monastery of the Chora (Kariye
Djami in Turkish) was converted into a mosque - its art treasures con–
cealed under whitewash, paint, and plaster. The painstaking restora–
tion, begun in 1948 with the sanction and friendly assistance of the
Turkish Government, is now complete. This splendid presentation of
all the frescoes and mosaics of the Kariye Djami is in three volumes,
boxed, 9 Y2 " x 12Y2": introduction, catalogue, with 434 monochrome
and 120 color plates. $55.00.
