and he also looks younger than he is. He wears very dignified clothes,
usually gray or sandy colored suits, but they do not make him look
old or stuffy. In fact they set off how young he is inside them. He
is built pretty well. His face is strong too, and though his skin is
sort of rough, his gray eyes make him seem sweet-natured.
S. This is the day I have to say good-bye to you, Patrick.
P. What? Can't I come here anymore?
S. Were you planning to, really?
P. I wasn't planning not to.
S. You'll be going soon anyway. I know. So I would rather
have it be good-bye on a recognized basis. Don't you think?
P. But you're not going anywhere?
S. No. But people come and go, don't they? You're coming
and going most of the time and will be for a number of years.
Eighteen, and you look younger. That makes a difference on the
hill. You'll be here for another ten years. Maybe ...
P. Don't you want me to come back?
S. Yes, Patrick. You can come whenever you want. I am just
saying good-bye now.
I am feeling scared, but I do not think I am showing it.
P.
I
wonder what my father wants me for?
S. Perhaps he's found out about your life, here.
P. That shouldn't really bother him.
S. Many things bother people that no one else is aware of.
P. He doesn't care, and it really isn't his business anymore.
S. Patrick, how do you plan to keep from loneliness, in your life?
P. Well, everyone has to face that, don't they? I'll find other
people who are lonely.
S. For supper, now and then?
P. No,
I
know I'll grow out of that. I'll want to settle down
more.
S. But there will always be new people, up and down the street
all day and in the evenings.
P. Do you think you are a great composer?
S.
No.
P. But a good one?
S.
No.
P. But I never heard anything like your Symphonic Suite. I
think it is beautiful when someone does something different.
