JASON THATCHER
Shortly after Dr. Nkrumah finished speaking, a mild earth tremor
shook Accra. Then, with greater political benefits than he could have
expected, he made an inspection tour of the city and, at least in front of
Cocoa House, walked among the people for the first time since January 8,
1963, when a bomb exploded at Accra Stadium a few minutes after he
had left. It is remarkable how his physical presence can still affect his
people.
Ghanaians who a week earlier had told me they'd just as soon
someone kiIIed
him,
all at once spoke of him with awe. They hadn't seen
him; but they'd heard stories that he was no longer surrounded by troops
in Christiansborg Castle, he was among them-"Oh Osagyefo," one
educated man told me, "they say he will never die. We know that is
nonsense, don't we? But Osagyefo is in God's protection.
It
is true.
And that means that this place Ghana is in God's protection."
