well become the definitive version
in English of Pushkin's masterpiece. Be·
sides the translation by Vladimir Nabo·
kov - who is famous for his novels both
in Russian and in English - it also in·
eludes a detailed and far-ranging com·
mentary by the translator and a repro·
duction of the complete Russian text.
Volume 1 contains the translation,
which is the first literal rendering of
Eugene Onegln into English. While reo
producing Pushkin's meanings faith·
fully, Nabokov retains the stanza form
of the original.

kov's full·scale commentary, which ex-
plains obscurities, traces literary
influences, relates Onegin to Pushkin's
other work, and presents a host of inter·
esting details about the poem and the
Russia it depicts. It also gives lines and
stanzas deleted by the censor or by
Pushkin himself, and variant passages
from Pushkin's notebooks.

reproduces, in full, the
1837 Russian edition - the last to ap·
pear in Pushkin's lifetime - from which
the translation was made.
With an extensive introduction, two
appendixes ("Abram Gannibal" and
"Note.s on Prosody"), and a compre·
