CORRESPONDENCE .
A TRIBUTE TO LEAVIS
SIRS:
A trust fund has been established
to pay tribute to the work of F.
R.
Leavis as teacher and critic after his
retirement last year. With the
aum
raised, it is hoped to endow a lecture–
ship at Cambridge University bearing
his name. An appeal has already been
sent to individuals likely to be inter–
ested; and over 7000 pounds have
al–
ready been collected, consisting most–
ly of small contributions by secondary
school and university teachers, gradu–
ates and undergraduates, and others.
We hope through this notice to reach
Americans who feel that they have
learned from Dr. Leavis (and from
the periodical
Scrutiny)
part of what
is valuable in their writing, their teach–
ing, or their thinking. The Trust has
an English committee, as well as con–
sultants in countries around the world.
Those in the United States are: Pro–
fessors Seymour Betsky, Fulbright Pro–
fessor, University of Utrecht, The
Netherlands; Reuben A. Brower, Har–
vard University; and Yvor Winters,
Stanford University. Copies of the leaf–
let which describes the aims of the
Trust may
be
obtained either from
The Secretary, F. R. Leavis Lecture–
ship Trust, 28 de Freville Avenue, Cam–
bridge, England; or from Mr. Andre
Schiffrin, Pantheon Books, 22 East 51st
St., New York 22, New York. Contri–
butions may be sent either to the Secre–
tary or to Mr. Schiffrin.
