GORKY AND HISTORY

To put it another way: in a generous review of a recent book of
mine, Harold praised me as a Citizen. Alas, this means not only City
Hall Park but the almost weekly drudgery of being a convention bum
for do-good causes, the hang-ups of the School Board, vainly badgering
the City Planning Commission, and trying to get those "disciples" to
act in community rather than goofing off. I hope this is all action
in
real history; but I cannot know, except that indeed I do it. So I also
write a book-review as a Citizen, to shake Harold and his deserved
admirers out of a now deadening historicity mesmerized by gigantic
Forces, and back into our modest history-making.
