true. He told Eckermann- to the con–
trary- that he was well pleased with his
story. I'm afraid that the assertion
about Rousseau
is
similarly based on
a long-time, unchecked, "reversed"
memory.
But I will take issue with Mr. Arvin
characterizing as a "wild generaliza–
tion" my statement that no one has ever
been able to tell the truth about him–
self. I think some of the force of my
generalization was lost by some further
statements I had originally made in
the typescript of my review which were
cut out because of limitations of space.
I was asked to suggest some cuts, and
did, but did not realize that one cut
would follow two real factual errors.
The missing sentences are (they follow
the two errors):
Even when people "tell all," a la
Frank Harris, they are boasting, which
is another form of dishonesty. Or per–
haps they are out for revenge, as was
Samuel Butler, whose father, it is re–
ported, was a man held in some regard
by his fellow men. Even
if
all the facts
are told, the question of tone arises.
What tone does one take in writing
about oneself?
It can't be done, I still affirm.

penitentially,
