man, men who have had that career, or something like
it.
The
man is broke, alcoholic, talented, and loves his wife as much as
we would love the air if we were drowning. She is on every page,
invisible though, like air, the condition of life. These are wild
stories made up about himself by an angry, proud, long-winded,
oddly ignorant, cranky and romantic old Crusoe who is all the
time in such states of profound despair and profound joy that
he holds on not by scratching a calender on a post but by telling
these stories over and over again. The stories wallow and stagger
and sometimes reach a kind of archaic magnificence which probably
sounds simple without all the wallowing. Once there was a little
boy who launched a toy boat in the sea, with a message sealed in it,
and the toy boat drifted in the sea, years and years, "through the
tempests of winter, over sunny summer seas, what tide rips had
caught it, what wild sea birds, shearwaters, storm petrels, jaegers,
