vagueness over the troublesome
spot. In place of motivation, the
narrative is held together by
carefully designated symbols,
such as the two refrigerators,
the colored boy, the swimming
pool, etc. But emotional events
are arbitrary and shallowly ex–
plored.
Much has been made of the
fact that Philip Roth has found
a "voice," which means that
he has devised a personal and
consistent way of arranging his
materials so that his narrative
flows smoothly from one sen–
·tence to the next. This is cer–
tainly true, and it is a pleasure
to discover a writer whose tech–
nical equipment is so completely
adequate to the d e man d s
placed upon it. Yet one could
wish that the demands had
been greater, even
if
that
would entail a blurring of the
voice. As it stands, the price
Roth pays for smoothness is
too high: he cheats himself,
and cheats his readers of the
truth.
