ADDRESS INQUIRIES TO:
To broaden opportunities in America. Specifically
to give opportunity for special experience or ad–
vanced study to outstanding individuals who
otherwise might not be able to reach their
fullest development or make their fullest con–
tribution.
The competition for Opportunity Fellowships is
open to citizens of the United States
with
racial
or cultural backgrounds or regions of original
residence as follows: Negroes, Spanish-Ameri–
cans, Chinese-Americans and Japanese-Americans,
American Indians, residents of Guam. Puerto
Rico, Samoa, the Virgin Islands, the Appala–
chian and Ozark Mountain areas, and the Trust
Territories.
Candidates are expected to be mature enough
to have given
evidence
0/
superior promise.
yet
young enough to have their careers before them.
and in general to be between the ages of 22
and 35. Academic applicants must have com–
pleted their undergraduate college education.
Although all factors are taken into considera–
tion by the Committee of Award, candidates
under 35 are given decided preference.
The fellowships are open not only for academic
study (graduate) but for other types of training
or experience which may be most useful in de–
veloping varied talents and varied forms of
leadership.
THE ARTS. Candidates in music other than
musical composition will be asked to audition
before a special jury. Those applying in such
fields as musical composition, creative writing,
and the fine
arts,
will be asked to submit repre–
sentative samples of their work. Ample notifica–
tion will be given candidates to facilitate sch,·d.
uling of auditions and preparation of materials.
APPRENTICESHIPS. Applicants for appren–
ticeships in such areas as journalism. business
and industrial management. extension work, la–
bor education, et cetera will be welcomed. This
category does not include regular vocational
training. Persons interested in the apprenticeship
type of program should write the Foundation for
additional information.
Awards are for a full year of serious work, not
for incidental or temporary projects. In special
cases grants may be renewed for a second year.
Awards are expected normally to range from
$1,000 to $3,000 depending on the nature of
the proposed project and the financial need of
the candidate.
It
is
hoped that in many cases
funds from other sources may supplement these
awards (for example fellowships for ,tudy in
foreign countries, additional scholarship aid from
universities, payments for certain types of ap–
prentice work, etc.).
Awards are made annually on the basis of
formal written applications by the candidates on
forms provided by the John Hay Whitney Foun–
dation.
Complete applications must be filed not later
than November 30 so as
to
insure ample time
for processing applications, assembling refer–
ences, and making selections.
The results of the competition will be an–
nounced in the latter part of April.
