VISSARION BELINSKY
in a word
by
everything that may have been necessary in its time
but is now stupid and mean.. . .
It
is ridiculous to imagine that all
this could happen of itself, merely with the passage of time, without
violent upheavals, without bloodshed. Men are so witless that they
must be forcibly led to happiness. What is the blood of thousands
compared to the degradation and suffering of millions. Therefore:
fiat justitia, pereat mundus!
(Translated from the Russian by Philip Rahv)
