The Language of Music
By DERYCK COOKE. This study argues that music is an
abstract language of emotion.
It
uses hundreds of music ex–
amples, ranging from plainsong to Stravinsky, to illustrate the
contention that all composers whose music has a tonal basis
have used very similar melodic phrases, harmonies, and rhythms
to express and evoke the same emotions. Finally it demonstrates
the expressive functioning of form by analyzing two complete
symphonies.
