saying that there are many fools and knaves in sociology
-I have heard it said that one finds them also in literary criticisrri
-but it is absurd to deny that the sociological enterprise, especially
over the last quarter of a century, has shown great promise and
considerable fulfillment. The number of vulgar popularizations of
sociological studies which has recently appeared is in some sense a
backhanded tribute which vice pays to virtue.

THE VANISHING ADOLESCENT
by EDGAR Z. FRIEDENBERG
Introduction by David Riesman
"This is an excellently written and extremely timely essay. Without" · ·
an excess of verbiage and cliche, the author defends his thesis that
the opportunity for real self-definition and identity, which must be
part of the growth period of adolescence, is slowly vanishing in our
society."
- Library Journal
"Thoughtful . . . treatises which . . . evaluate in an intelligen; •
fashion just how effectively our high schools are meeting the needs .
of our students today are woefully few. One of the best we've ever ':'
come across is Dr. Edgar Z. Friedenberg's
The Va"ishing Adolescent. · .
We recommend it to any reader who wants to take a thoughtful 160k .
at the problem of today's adolescents."
