much support Labour lost by failing to take the initiative over
nuclear disarmament.) Sometime before the election a Tory
guile–
lessly admitted at a public meeting that Socialists were always more
intelligent than Conservatives.
If,
during the next few years, Labour
could use this intelligence to build up a reputation for serious,
re–
sponsible moral leadership in politics-a kind of respect that
Sir
Stafford Cripps, even when most unpopular as Chancellor of
the
Exchequer, always commanded-their position at the next election
might be unassailable. They might even educate the electorate
into
respect for something more than television sets and motor cars.
But
it will need intelligence and not the vague pulpit-thumping
that
usually passes for morality in public life.
If
Labour fails in this last
and most difficult chance, it will take a major war to get rid of
the
Tories.
