A Note
of
Amical Dissent
Our admiration for
PR
increases with the years-and our regard for
its Editors. Yet, for the record, we must say that we often disagree with
them, and particularly with some of their
omissions. De gustibus non
est disputandum
...
but, may we ask, in most friendly spirit: is
Partisan
doing right by its readers when it consistently excludes from its pages
the work of such writers as Edward Dahlberg, Kenneth Patchen, Henry
Miller, John Hawkes and Kenneth Rexroth?
Obviously, we are prejudiced. New Directions publishes a number of
books by these writers, and we are convinced that each of them has
great stature. We hold that Rexroth and Patchen are among the best
poets writing today; that Edward Dahlberg's prose, and his mythic
vision, would be unique in any age; that Miller merits the Nobel Prize;
and that Hawkes has notably extended the frontier of experimental
fiction.
Time, as they say, will tell; for the moment, we submit, reader, to
your verdict, if you will read some of these books which, we must infer,
the Editors of
PR
do not much like:
