ing metaphysics among certain nine–
teenth century American writers; I
even know-having learned it from
several James critics and scholars un–
armed with Mr. Anderson's Skeleton
Key-that James was partly shaped by
this heritage of thought. But I insist
that James the novelist, precisely be–
cause and insofar as he was a novelist,
had to work out for himself a much
more complex, worldly, conditioned
and dialectically charged view of hu–
man conduct than the vaporous pon–
derosities that Mr. Anderson has tried
to impose on him.

I am intrigued by Mr. Anderson's
belligerent appeal to my students.
(What was
it
that such things were
called in the '30s-a United Front
from Below?) But let me quickly
waive the proprieties and urge that,
reading list in hand, he come and
spend an afternoon with those stu–
dents, talking about Henry James, li–
terature and "the great American
quarrel with matter." He should find
it a lively experience.
