PARTISAN REVIEW
Bacon would seem to achieve their power by rejecting that hegemony
of French values which had temporarily vitiated British art and by
restating, in contemporary terms, those attitudes which nourished the
triumphs of the earlier nineteenth century. But as anyone familiar with
the work of such younger British painters as Scott or Davie can recognize,
this dialectic between London and Paris- and now, New York-has
today become an animated and productive one, and the virtues of
British insularity may soon be a matter of history.
