ganized according to the laws of reason
and predictability, and to this end all
of its powers are directed. This is a
conspiracy.
Even the "conspiracy" is present
in order to complete the parallel
with Nazi ideology. Of course we
are no longer dealing with the
conspiracy of the Elders of Zion ;
but here again it is not criticism
we find but the uncovering of a
"conspiracy."
In other words, all the negative
characteristics of Western civiliza–
tion known for centuries are at–
tributed specifically to the Ameri–
can people. Thus it is with the help
of both Huxley's and Orwell's vi–
sion that America is being de–
scribed. Logically, ·it follows that
all who do not want God's throne
to be empty are goaded on against
the evil-doer America. Since such
metaphysical phantoms incite per–
secutions and kindle hatred, they
are
a
mortal danger. They may
truly be called the witch-hunting
demonologies of modern times.
It is not a question of defending
America but of asking, rather,
whether it is permissible to apply
those methods which had their
greatest triumph in Hitler's time,
i.e., to turn a people into a meta–
physical
scapegoat
supposedly
threatening the existence of the
world. It is not permissible!
Whether one is dealing with Jews
or Americans, with Germans, Rus–
sians, or the inhabitants of San
Marino, such methods should be
ruled out.
And now we come to the man
for whom Salomon and J ungk
only prepared the way. Salomon
heralded his coming even before
he was published, and Jungk de–
fended Matthias against his critics
(although he assumes at the same
time a critical attitude and does
not stand fully by the propaganda
which he has created).

The U.S. is the home of all servi–
tude, just as Pandora's box is the
home of all evil.

MATTHIAS
In the title of his book
The Dis–
covery of America Anno
1953, L.
L.
Matthias compares himself to
Columbus. What do they have in
common? Columbus wrongly be–
lieved himself to have discovered
India. Matthias wrongly believes
he has discovered America. Colum–
bus as a result of his error found
America. Matthias in
his
slander–
ous work found what in the Ger–
man text he heatedly calls "frus–
tration." It remains to be asked:
whose "frustration"?
The subtitle of this book on
America- a product of the sickest
aspect of contemporary Europe-–
is
The Ordered Chaos.
What is
the old continent in contrast to
this? The ordered paradise? The
unordered paradise?
According to our author, life is
dismal in America. Characteristic
of the country is the amount of
"racketeering." About half of all
families are without means. The
workers have no homes; and those
they do own are
in
a miserable
