of a gallery, an art which cries out for space and fresh air. Above all,
it is an art which repudiates the museum (and therefore the gallery,
and the
idea
of the gallery).
It
is an art which calls less for an exhibition
of itself than for a site where it can live its natural life.
This sculpture arrives at an ambiguous moment, however.
It
would
be tempting to say that it is ahead of its time, but this would assume
a happier time ahead when our relation to sculpture promises to be
more forthright, an assumption for which there is small evidence today.
What this sculpture demands, of course, is an architecture with which
it can identify its aims. But it makes this demand at a time when ad–
vanced architecture seems to be hardening into a convention as rigid
as the academicism it once challenged. Thus, sculpture remains confined
to the museum at the same time that it repudiates the museum. What
it is no doubt waiting for is a post-modernist architecture which will
accommodate its ideals.
In the face of this crisis, one can only marvel that there are still
sculptors willing to undertake the expense of spirit (not to mention the
expense in sheer dollars ) it requires to be a sculptor today. Perhaps one
can understand, too, why so many of these sculptors have been reduced
to producing mere
objets d'art
instead of the vigorous public works
which their talents seem ready for. It is because this crisis strikes at
the center of things that one finds Mr. Ritchie's reticence of the larger
issues so disappointing.
