HAVE MERGED AND MOVED TO
119 East 54th Street# New York 22# N. Y.
The Holliday Bookshop was founded in 1921. It became one of the
very few nationally famous bookstores. This happened in part through
its leadership in selling Lawrence, Joyce, Woolf, through its virtual
discovery of Firbank, Henry Green and others, but, for the rest, through
carrying a stock different from elsewhere, and to many more interesting.
Periscope Bookshop started in 1949, developed along the same lines, and
has been first to find American readers for Christopher Fry and Angus
Wilson.

A selection of recent books of exceptional merit:
Gwen Raverat. PERIOD PIECE ($4.75): A Cambridge Childhood. The
childhood reminiscence of a noted illustrator, who is a granddaughter
of Charles Darwin. She writes about the Darwins with such humor
and charm, and with such skillful selection of detail, that her book
will be found quite the best of all the recent memoirs from England.
Thomas Hinde. MR. NICHOLAS ($3.00): Mr. Hinde is certainly one of
very few writers under thirty who should presume
to
take up your
time. His observation and wit are fresher than any new writer's
since Angus Wilson.
G. M. Young. STANLEY BALDWIN ($4.75): This is an essay on a career,
rather than a "life." .Since Baldwin died despised, most people have
forgotten that he was the most popular Englishman between Pitt and
Churchill, or, at least, why.
lain Moncreiffe
&
Don Pottinger. SIMPLE HERALDRY ($2.50): Heraldry
explained in the only sensible way, with the text secondary to illus–
trations in full color. Persons who never thought they cared might
surprise themselves with this light-hearted, pretty book, or delight
someone else.
