ness and spirituality it can find in the Spinozas and Freuds of the world
and to ignore their uncompromising idea of nature and of man's place
in nature.
It
must be noted that Dr. Fromm, though "culturally oriented," is
by no means a cultural relativist. With an assurance Freud never dis–
played in making such generalizations, he speaks of the fundamental
and "immutable laws inherent in human nature and human functioning
which operate in any given culture." Summarized very crudely, these
are the laws according to which man struggles either neurotically or
normally to exist amid his opposing impulses toward dependence and
freedom and to develop toward that final freedom which allows one
to love fully, to seek truth, to develop fully one's creative potentialities,
to realize one's "moral and intellectual integrity." Fromm regards man
as a dependent, powerless, thwarted, and amorphous creature who seeks
through a complicated dialectic of interpersonal relationships to establish
in his personality the moral core of the world's "humanist religions." As
is usual in Dr. Fromm's writings, the moral idea is admirable. But if
psychoanalysis is still a method of treating neurosis and, beyond that,
of investigating the psychic character of man, what has all this to do
with psychoanalysis ? It would appear to have a good deal more to do
